A Shot Glass of Recovery

An odd name for a podcast on Recovery? When I was wondering what to call this podcast I reflected back on my drinking history and how I used alcohol and drugs as a Solution to my thinking, my problems, my very existence in general...I always reached for that shot glass of solution. But when the glasses were empty and the bottles ran dry the solution I’d used for decades had only made things worse. I’ve been on this recovery road for a little over 19 years now and what I’ve learned is my recovery is contingent on carrying the message to others. I hope you sit back and enjoy listening to the speaker series I’ve curated from my home group AA Solution Seekers. Perhaps when you feel most alone, in need of company or a positive message, you will join me as I share some of the wisdom the folks in recovery have shared with me over the years. This podcast is just recycled feedback from the rooms of recovery. Thank you for listening and helping me stay sober one day at a time.

Hello, everybody! I'm so thrilled to welcome you to this week's episode of A Shotglass of Recovery. We are embarking on a new journey, having wrapped up our Big Book Study, and today we're diving headfirst into the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions. If you're joining us for the first time, or you're a seasoned regular, I promise you an engaging exploration of AA's foundational roots and transformative practices.
We started the session with a fascinating glimpse into AA's history, tracing its origins back to the Oxford Group's spiritual formula for self-improvement. It's a riveting story of how Roland H.'s journey for sobriety and his meeting with Carl Jung paved the path that eventually led to the creation of AA. Who would have thought that a Rhode Islander and a Swiss psychoanalyst would contribute to a movement that reshapes millions of lives?
Our conversations also highlighted some remarkable events like Bill W.'s spiritual awakening and the pivotal meetings at the Mayflower Hotel and Sieberling estate. It's always astonishing to see how simple acts of reaching out can lead to monumental changes in lives struggling with alcohol.
In the later part of our meeting, we delved into the significance of the 12 Steps and Traditions. It's amazing to reflect on how these guiding principles not only support individuals in their personal sobriety journey but also ensure the unity and sustainability of our fellowship. Oh, and if you're wondering about those lively debates on being 'recovered' vs. 'recovering'—we didn't shy away from that one either!
Whether you're contemplating AA, new to it, or seeking deeper connection and understanding, this episode is packed with heartfelt stories, historical insights, and encouraging discussions. I'm grateful for every voice shared tonight and invite you to keep the conversation going. You're always welcome, whether it’s here in our meetings or in your journey to recovery.

Hey there, friend! Welcome to another inspiring episode of the Speaker Series on "A Shot Glass of Recovery." I'm Lisa M., your host, and today we have an incredible journey to share—from chaos to clarity, struggle to serenity. We're thrilled to introduce you to Keith P. from Greenwood, South Carolina. Keith's life story is one that touches the heart and soul, filled with ups and downs, challenges, and triumphs.
Born in Brooklyn in the '60s, Keith grew up navigating a world of mixed Southern American and Caribbean cultures. Life threw him many curveballs, from dealing with familial losses to enduring emotional and psychological abuse. Yet, amidst the chaos, Keith discovered small pockets of joy and safety, especially in the lessons imparted by his grandmother who held onto spirituality like a life raft.
Keith's journey wasn't straightforward. As a nursing professional and a military serviceman, he consistently battled feelings of inadequacy and fought against the overwhelming pressure to fit into roles imposed upon him by others. This struggle led him down the path of alcohol dependency, a coping mechanism that spiraled out of control. A turning point came with a DUI charge and a subsequent state intervention that required re-evaluation and self-assessment.
What truly opened the door to healing was finding a community in the AA Solution Seekers. Through engaging in spiritual steps, acknowledging personal powerlessness, and depending on a higher power for guidance, Keith began to rediscover his purpose. From being a people pleaser, he transitioned to someone who leads with compassion and understanding, especially in his work with marginalized communities.
Today, Keith lives humbly yet richly, cherishing simple joys like spending time with his dogs and mentoring others on their journeys. His testimony is not just about recovery from substance abuse, but rather a profound reflection on seeking solutions within — a practice of gratitude and acceptance. So, as you listen to Keith's story, you'll find it’s not merely a tale of recovery but one of embracing life with open arms and living with intention.
If Keith's story resonates with you, don't forget to subscribe, like, and leave a review to keep our community thriving!

Welcome to A Shot Glass of Recovery, hosted by Lisa — your guide on this transformative journey through the AA Big Book. Whether you're a long-term listener or just hopping on board, our deep dive into the realm of recovery is all about breaking down walls and building a new life, line by line, word by word.
Let's talk about change. It's raw, it's messy, and sometimes feels impossible. But together, we explore these daunting concepts, dissecting the pages of this book while throwing in a little history, a pinch of humor, and a lot of real life. We don't just read; we dissect, laugh, and grow — sharing experiences that resonate deeply. That feeling of never having enough? We call it 'the disease of more,' and it's something we tackle head-on, reminding us of the power of transformation through surrender, faith, and community.
Our episodes shine a light on the transformative power of recovery — switching from a mindset of self to unity under one God, paving the path for sanity and inner peace. The Big Book talks, and we listen keenly, like a timeless dialogue that spans decades. It’s about realizing where we fit into the bigger picture, accepting that we are flawed yet beautifully striving for a true sense of belonging and providing support to others.
Together, we embrace the fellowship, moving beyond mere compliance toward a genuine surrender that fosters real change. It's about blending heartfelt history with practical advice — ensuring every listener knows they're not alone in this vast journey of recovery.
In A Shot Glass of Recovery, listeners are beckoned to share and reflect, giving voice to their journey. Whether you're at the top of the world or caught in a spiral, this podcast holds a space for you, gently guiding you back to the path of recovery. It might begin with a single sentence from 1939, but here, it’s a living, breathing community of support, rooted in timeless wisdom and shared hope.

Hey everyone, it's Lisa here, your dedicated guide on this journey called "A Shot Glass of Recovery." Today, we're diving into a topic that's so close to my heart, "A Vision for You," as we embark on Episode 51 of our Big Book Study. And let me tell you, whether you're tuning in for the first time or a seasoned listener, buckle up because it's going to be one transformative ride!
You know those times when you felt utterly alone on this path? Yeah, I've been there. It’s those times that led me to the meetings, sitting on those cold, hard chairs in church basements, only to discover a warmth and understanding I never imagined possible. This episode is all about embracing hope, a theme so beautifully captured in Chapter 11 of the Big Book.
Together, we'll explore the stark contrasts between the joyous conviviality of "normal" drinkers and the heartbreaking wakefulness we experience in our struggles. But it doesn't stop there. We pause, reflect, and dive deep into our personal journeys – the highs, the lows, and the moments of bewilderment, frustration, and despair.
Throughout it all, we share stories, dissect passages, and uncover the steps that bring peace to our racing minds. There's no judgement here, only the kind of understanding that comes from shared experiences. And for those of you just starting out or fearing what lies ahead, remember: you're never alone in this.
We explore the gift of fellowship, where laughter, camaraderie, and genuine connections replace old, harmful habits. Imagine reclaiming your joy through community board games, or finding solace in being alone – safely and contentedly. These are the pockets of joy that await when you let go and let yourself be part of something greater.
So grab your shot glass of recovery, savor the distilled wisdom, and let's navigate this powerful chapter together. Dive in and discover what it means to truly live, unshackled from the past yet enriched by the lessons it brings. Thanks for being here with me, sharing the laughter, the insight, and most importantly, the hope. Until next time, keep embracing your journey. <3

A Shot Glass of Recovery

A Shot Glass of Recovery is Lisa’s solo venture after departing from her popular 100, 000 listening audience on 2 Sober Chicks. Her dear sober friend with whom she created a podcast in 2017 suffered a traumatic event and together they decided to end 2 Sober Chicks.  Perhaps,  one day they will podcast together again should they meet on the road to happy destiny once more. One can hope. There is always hope.

’Til then, Lisa has decided to light another candle in the dark world of Alcoholism & Addiction.

One for the Road? We never said, “No!” to that before, so why not take me along on your drive to work, walk in the park, or next road trip?

A Shot Glass of Recovery is a twist on an old solution made new, just like her journey in recovery made her feel whole at last.
