A Shot Glass of Recovery

An odd name for a podcast on Recovery? When I was wondering what to call this podcast I reflected back on my drinking history and how I used alcohol and drugs as a Solution to my thinking, my problems, my very existence in general...I always reached for that shot glass of solution. But when the glasses were empty and the bottles ran dry the solution I’d used for decades had only made things worse. I’ve been on this recovery road for a little over 19 years now and what I’ve learned is my recovery is contingent on carrying the message to others. I hope you sit back and enjoy listening to the speaker series I’ve curated from my home group AA Solution Seekers. Perhaps when it tickles your fancy you will join me in the not so dark corners of my mind as I ramble on about all the wisdom the folks in recovery have shared with me, as they so lovingly carried the message. This was one of my favourite online meetings during covid. They talked program which, let's face it, a lot of online meetings were not doing at the time.
They stayed in the solution focusing on getting out of self and gave solid resources and guided all in attendance how to identify ego and stay out of self by inviting God in every single minute of every day.

Patty O (or Patty R.) with over 40 years of sobriety teaches us some keys to staying sober for that long, one day at a time.
She has a home group, a sponsor who has a sponsor, sponsees and she does a ton of service. 
Chances are if you've been in a psych ward or a prison institution - you've met her doing service.
 
She is a remarkable example of how recovery should look.

We have landed on my FAVOURITE pages in the big book. Pages I once hated because I was told to read them so many times. But they would identify the real problem that stood in the way of my facing life effectively!
In later pages they would then reveal the solution to that very problem!
That's what this book does.

Resentment – this word occurs 17 times in the first 164 pages of the big book of alcoholics anonymous.
 
We first come across it a couple of times in Bill’s Story, Bill Wilson was the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.
One of those times is found on page 15 when Bill is talking about being sick, and he doesn’t mean physically.
 
Today I share my own perspective and thoughts on resentments and talk a bit about Emmett Fox and his book  "The Sermon on the Mount".
 

I recently came across this cool instagram page called the Holistic Psychologist. Her name is Dr. LePera and I think she is pretty cool. I recently bought one of her books called How to Do the Work. Being an alcoholic I know what that work is - it's work on self, discovery, change, letting go, detaching from outcomes and perceived notions and old ideas. Everything I am reading in her book, I feel I have gone through in my journey to recovery.

When I first met Bel, she was just like I was when I was new...angry and full of self pity. She asked me to be her sponsor and I said I had a full roster at that time and directed her to another. When that connection didn't work out, she came back again, still full I told her and suggested another person.
That person didn't work out. Third time was a charm, I finally had an opening and agreed to sponsor Bel. The wonderful thing about sponsorship, is seeing the change in someone when the program starts to finally click. 
Like all newcomers, (myself most definitely included!!!) Bel was defiant, obstinate and argumentative! Yet somehow still a treat to work with. lol
 
She has come a long way and around the 1 year mark finally spoke at our group. Not a dry eye was in the room (thankfully for us she couldn't see it! and yes she loves this type of humor, she has told us!).
 
Bel is an example that no matter the obstacle, you can get sober if you change your perception.
You don't need to see it, you only need to believe it.
Isn't our program just like that?
