A Shot Glass of Recovery

An odd name for a podcast on Recovery? When I was wondering what to call this podcast I reflected back on my drinking history and how I used alcohol and drugs as a Solution to my thinking, my problems, my very existence in general...I always reached for that shot glass of solution. But when the glasses were empty and the bottles ran dry the solution I’d used for decades had only made things worse. I’ve been on this recovery road for a little over 19 years now and what I’ve learned is my recovery is contingent on carrying the message to others. I hope you sit back and enjoy listening to the speaker series I’ve curated from my home group AA Solution Seekers. Perhaps when you feel most alone, in need of company or a positive message, you will join me as I share some of the wisdom the folks in recovery have shared with me over the years. This podcast is just recycled feedback from the rooms of recovery. Thank you for listening and helping me stay sober one day at a time.

My sponsor introduced me to one of her hero's, Danny the Firefighter. I loved his gentle nature, I could relate to his struggle with the inner demons of this disease and the battle with the mental health scorpion known as PTSD.

Danny has given a talk on our show before, this is the one where he reveals his experience as a fire fighter at the world trade center on that terrible day on the 9th of September when North America was rocked by an act that brought us all to our knees. War is a crusher of souls, dignity and decency. It is the ultimate act of selfish, self-centered behaviour, ego and arrogance. When people take opposing sides and both believe they are right.

Danny was a first responder who had been sober for 2 decades before this tragic day added another burden to his plate. I don't think he ever saw himself as the hero he was, he was "just doing his job".

This is his story.

And we miss him.

Tuesday Sep 10, 2024

Today we continue from the bottom of page 73 into midway of page 75 of the chapter Into Action.
Sometimes in a big book study you will find you don't further than a few lines, a couple paragraphs.
The main idea to remember is always IDENTIFICATION. Reading the big book with another alcoholic who got sober before us is the taproot of our shared experience and understanding our disease.

I hope if you identify with the thoughts, feelings and behaviours found in the book, you stay long enough to see light at the end of the tunnel and a way into joyous, sober solution based living!

We seem to get the most amazing selection of speakers at A.A. Solution Seekers. How do we do that?
One, I've noticed a lot of meetings online have forgotten about the Open Speaker meeting. Two, we are blessed with a long timer who just knows a ton of speakers from decades of hanging around AA. Three, our home group has a ton of new and old experience who all live in the solution. Four, one of my sponsee's chairs an online meeting called One Day at a Time out of the U.K. and she has connected with amazing speakers from around the world and shares them with us.

That's how we were blessed to have Karen R come and share her story with us live on a Sunday at 7am.
Karen's story can be found in the 4th edition of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is called The River of Denial.

And join us live 7 days a week if you want to start your day right.

A woman 30 years sober

Sunday Sep 01, 2024

Sunday Sep 01, 2024

This is my sponsor. You will fall in love with her.
I will have to Dexter you...but Don't Worry...God will make me realize that's a bad idea. :)

Today my sponsor Celebrates 30 years sobriety. Some people say "Don't drink and don't die and you too can stay sober this long." But there is more to it than that. It's called surrender to God, willingness, action, labour, perserverance, deflation of ego, humility...and a constant quest to be better today than you were tomorrow as you seek to do God's will in this world.
For that I salute her and others like her.

We don't have many old timers left these days.

We welcome a fellow Canuck  Alex.

Good Morning!

Today's daily reading is from a #Hazeldon app based on writings from #MelanieBeattie

Today I throw in my own thoughts while reading the selection "Owning our energy".

Still trying to figure out #LiveShow on #Podbean I invited some friends from my local home group to do a test.

The subject was Tolerance / Compassion / Patience / Forgiveness / Humility / Good Will / Love  these are some of the PRINCIPLES OF SUCCESS. Success at what you ask? Well EVERYTHING! LIFE in general basically.

So we touched on a few as we try to figure out some of the glitches of a live cast.

this is that episode...warts and all!

It will get better.

This guest came to my attention from one of my sponsee's, she was described as "the most down to earth, hard hitting, honest, real speaker...I have ever heard.".

Pretty amazing recommendation! This was Mandy's first time being recorded, I doubt it will be her last.

We are on episode 26, Chapter 6 Into Action.
Discussing what to do after we have taken a personal inventory.

Thursday Aug 22, 2024

Hi, I'm Lisa, and welcome to a Shotglass of Recovery. In this episode, we dive into one of Bill Wilson's profound letters published in The Grapevine in January 1958, titled "The Next Frontier: Emotional Sobriety." Join me as I read and reflect on Bill's insights about emotional maturity and balance, drawn from his own experiences and struggles in early sobriety.
We'll explore the challenges faced by long-time AA members who, despite achieving sobriety, often still grapple with emotional well-being. Bill Wilson's candid discussion on the necessity of ongoing spiritual and emotional work highlights the importance of humility, self-awareness, and the continuous effort to overcome dependencies and unrealistic demands on others.
Listen in as I share personal anecdotes and insights, emphasizing the significance of maintaining emotional sobriety through the principles of AA and the teachings of the 12 Steps. This episode is a heartfelt reminder that true recovery involves not just abstaining from alcohol, but also achieving peace and balance within oneself.

A Shot Glass of Recovery

A Shot Glass of Recovery is Lisa’s solo venture after departing from her popular 100, 000 listening audience on 2 Sober Chicks. Her dear sober friend with whom she created a podcast in 2017 suffered a traumatic event and together they decided to end 2 Sober Chicks.  Perhaps,  one day they will podcast together again should they meet on the road to happy destiny once more. One can hope. There is always hope.

’Til then, Lisa has decided to light another candle in the dark world of Alcoholism & Addiction.

One for the Road? We never said, “No!” to that before, so why not take me along on your drive to work, walk in the park, or next road trip?

A Shot Glass of Recovery is a twist on an old solution made new, just like her journey in recovery made her feel whole at last.
